What is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)?

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is an arrangement that links members in a community with their local farmers in a mutually supportive relationship. People join as members of a farm’s CSA program by buying “shares” in the harvest, thereby receiving a weekly box of fresh, locally grown, in-season produce. In turn, farmers receive financial support from people in their surrounding communities. The CSA model helps to build a more sustainable, environmentally clean, and just world by supporting local, small-scale, organic, and socially responsible farms, while increasing the awareness, joy of eating, and health of community members.

What do I get as a member of Green Oaks’ CSA Program?

Starting June 5, 2007 you will receive a box of fresh, organic, in-season produce once a week through November 13 (24 weeks). The produce varies as the season progresses. Each week’s box contains 8-10 items of the nearly 40 veggies, fruits, and herbs we grow. You will also receive weekly farm newsletters and recipes. CSA members will be invited to gatherings at the farm, providing a wonderful opportunity to see our beautiful farm and how your food is grown.

What kinds of crops are available?

The chart below lists the crops that we are planning on offering for the 2007 season and when they will be available. Keep in mind, though, that we are at the whim of Mother Nature. Some years we have rainy springs and/or early rains in the fall, which can slow plant growth and occasionally cause a crop to fail. The chart below is therefore not set in stone but it does give you a sense of the changing bounty throughout the season.

We grow the following crops continuously throughout the season you so you may see them in your box every month: chard, collards, kale, lettuce, salad mix, strawberries, beets, broccoli, arugula, carrots, kohlrabi, scallions.

How much does it cost?

Regular Share - $ 20 / week
Most members receive our Regular Share which contains a generous variety of vegetables, herbs and fruit. It is typically suitable for a two person household for one week.

Large Share - $ 30 / week
If you want more produce than our Regular Share provides you might want to consider signing up for our Large Share. The amount of produce will typically feed a family of four for one week. You could also split or alternate weeks with a friend.

Flower Share - $ 7.50 / week
You will receive a bouquet of organically grown, colorful farm flowers. The flowers in the bouquet will change with the season. We plant many different varieties of flowers in the field among our other crops. Mixing rows of flowers and veggies creates beauty in the field, attracts beneficial insects, and provides numerous small windbreaks.

We ask members for a down payment of $80 (regular share) or $120 (large share) and/or $30 (flower share) to sign up for the CSA (this is a month’s worth of boxes). If after this time you want to continue, the balance is then due for the remainder of the season’s boxes (at 20 more weeks, it’s $400 for regular share, $600 for large share, and $150 for flower share). Members may pay in monthly installments by sending in postdated checks. We also offer work-shares to those who don’t want to pay for their boxes or who just want to spend time working on our beautiful farm in exchange for produce. If you feel that you might be overwhelmed with the amount of food in the boxes, we pair households up who want to share a box.

Our neighbors at Pie Ranch are raising fabulous farm fresh eggs that are laid by pastured-chickens. If you want to receive their eggs in your CSA box, call them at 650-879-0971. It’s $285 for 50 weeks ($5.69/dozen).
